Dr Annette Uwineza is an Associate Professor in Human Genetics at the University of Rwanda. She is a Medical Doctor with a Phd in Medical Sciences (Human Genetics) from the University of Liege. Her research focuses on etiologies of genetic disorders specifically those leading to intellectual disability, developmental delay and congenital malformations. In 2016, Dr UWINEZA was selected the first cohort of the International Summit in Human Genetics and Genomics, NIH, USA. This summit reinforced her knowledge on research and diagnostic of genetic diseases.Throughout her career, UWINEZA has been immensely involved in clinical services, academics, research, capacity building, and management in the health sector. From March 2017 to August 2020, she served as the Head of Department of Clinical Biology at the School of Medicine and Pharmacy, at the University of Rwanda . In November 2021, Dr UWINEZA was selected as a Laureate of the11th edition of the L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Sub-Sahara Africa Program. Currently, she is an African Academy of Sciences-ARISE fellow and her project is designed to identify genomics and environmental factors of Neurodevelopmental disorders in Rwandan children. In addition, Dr UWINEZA is also interested in improvement of medical education especially delivery of basic sciences courses.
