Dr Chux Daniels
Research Fellow in Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) Policy, University of Sussex
Dr Chux Daniels, PhD is a Research Fellow in Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) Policy at the prestigious Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU), University of Sussex, United Kingdom (UK). He is also an Extraordinary Associate Professor at the University of Pretoria. His on-going research at SPRU include: (1) Transformative Innovation Policy (TIP) Africa Hub, funded by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC); (2) A Political Economy analysis of Science Granting Councils Initiative (SGCI) in Sub-Saharan Africa, also funded by IDRC; (3) ESRC-funded GCRF Inclusive Societies: How to link industrial and social innovation for inclusive development: lessons from tackling cancer care in Africa - countries involved are: Kenya, Tanzania, India, and the UK; (4) Transformative Innovation Policy Consortium (TIPC); which brings together global actors of researchers and policymakers to examine innovation systems and the future of innovation policy – its foundation, formulation, implementation and governance. Alongside SPRU, the founding research organisations are from Colombia, Finland Norway, South Africa, and Sweden; and lastly, (5) Transformative Innovation and 4th Industrial Revolution, involving the Kenya, Tanzania, India and the UK.
Alongside research and teaching, Chux is involved in active STI policy work. He has in recent years provided STI policy research and advice to organisations that include: the United Nations (UNCTAD and UNESCAP), and the World Bank. His services to the African Union include the development of a M&E framework for the continental "Science, Technology and Innovation Strategy for Africa" (STISA-2024), research, training and capacity building. His country experience include: the UK, Africa and MENA, Asia-Pacific, and Northern America. In 2017 and 2018, he worked with South African government in developing the country's White Paper on STI. He is currently working with the Government of Kenya in formulating the country's STI policy. In addition to his research and teaching, Chux supervises Doctoral researchers and MSc students, and convenes modules on STI policy. He is the coordinator of SPRU's Africa Engagement Programme. Chux is also a visiting fellow at various research and policy institutions.
