János Áder is a prominent Hungarian statesman and environmental advocate who served as the President of Hungary from 2012 to 2022, re-elected for a second term in 2017. Throughout his presidency, he focused on environmental protection, sustainability, and Hungary's role in addressing global climate challenges.
He began his political career as a Member of the Hungarian National Assembly from 1990 to 2009. During this period, he rose to become the Speaker of the National Assembly from 1998 to 2002.
In 2009, he transitioned to the European political stage as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP). As an MEP, he was a Member of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety and represented EU relations with Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and the European Economic Area.
His commitment to environmental protection became a hallmark of his career, leading him to co-found the Blue Planet Foundation in 2016. After his presidency, he is the Chairman of the foundation, continuing his work in climate advocacy.
He was also a member of the High-Level Panel on Water (2016-2018), where he worked on international water management and conservation issues.
