Professor Mark Balendres holds a PhD in Agricultural Science (Plant Pathology) from the University of Tasmania, Australia. He is a Full Professor and the Graduate Program Coordinator in the Department of Biology at De La Salle University (DLSU), Philippines. His research is focused on enhancing food security and safety by investigating the causative agents of plant diseases in the tropics, exploring factors influencing disease spread and development, and identifying sustainable management strategies. He leads the DLSU Plant and Soil Health Research Unit, where he also mentors students while fostering collaboration with national and international scientists. In addition to his research, Prof. Balendres provides technical support to universities, research institutions, and organizations to strengthen skills and knowledge in plant pathology, scholarly publication, and leadership. He is an active member of the Global Young Academy and other scientific societies, including the Australasian Plant Pathology Society, the Philippine Phytopathological Society, and the International Society for Root Research. In recognition of his contributions, he has received two "Gerardo O. Ocfemia Outstanding Plant Pathologist" awards, in Research (2019) and Extension and Community Development (2024), as well as the PMCP Pest Management Award in Research in 2023.
