He graduated from the University POLITEHNICA of Bucharest in 1962 where he received in 1970 the PhD title in Control Engineering. His studies were accompanied by multiple specialization programs carried out in the USA, Germany, etc. Through his entire academic career, since the foundation of the Department of Automatic Control, Full Professor in 1982.
His leading positions within the University POLITEHNICA of Bucharest include: Dean of the Faculty of Automatic Control and Computers, Head of the Department of Automatic Control and Systems Engineering, Rector of Politehnica University.
He was the President of the National Council of Scientific Research in Hight Education on University (1994-2011). Between 2000 and 2011 he was the Vice-President of the Consultative College for Research and Development of the Ministry of Research. He was the Romania representative in the JRC Board of Governors (2005-2012) and a member of the Governing Council of the European Science Foundation (2002-2011).
His main research interests include: Advanced Control Algorithms and Strategies, Intelligent Control Systems with Applications in Biotechnology, Manufacturing, Design and Simulation of Dynamic Systems, Cyber-Physical Systems, Brain Modeling. He is the author of more than 40 books and more than 300 scientific papers published in specialized journals and conference proceedings.
From 2003, professor Ioan Dumitrache is member of the Romanian Academy and from 2018 its General Secretary.
