Ghaleeb Jeppie is the Minister Counsellor (Science, Innovation and Education) at the South African Embassy in Tokyo. Prior to joining the Department of Science and Innovation, he served as the Chief Director for International Relations in the Department of Higher Education and Training. 

 

He studied at the University of the Western Cape and the University of London, where he obtained a Master’s degree. He also undertook part of his training at the British Civil Service College and the Educational Policy Research and Social Change in Southern Africa in the Department of Policy Studies, University of London.

 

Mr Jeppie joined the civil service in 1994 after the first democratic elections and is credited for establishing the education diplomacy function in a democratic South Africa. This function entailed developing educational relations with partners in various countries and with multilateral agencies and advising the various ministers under whom he served on international relations in education. His responsibilities also included management of the official development assistance programmes to the education sector and serving on various international committees, including the UNESCO National Commission.
