Kutemba Kapanji-Kakoma is a senior researcher in the water, energy, and environment programme at the National Institute for Scientific and Industrial Research, Zambia. Previously, Kutemba worked in the mining industry (hydrometallurgy) in a cobalt and copper processing plant. Her research interests lie in modelling biorefinery complexes and bio-based products (using Aspen Plus), circular economies, renewable energy technologies, wastewater treatment technologies (adsorption, ion-exchange), and sustainability studies (techno-economic, social, and environmental/life-cycle assessments). She holds a PhD, MSc, and BEng (Hons) in Chemical Engineering from the Universities of Stellenbosch (RSA), Witwatersrand (RSA), and Birmingham (UK), respectively. She is also a member of the Zambia Academy of Sciences (ZaAS) and an adult educator.
