Jose Mustre de Leon is a Professor of Physics at Cinvestav, since 1992. 

He was chairperson of the Applied Physics Department from 1997-2000. From 2003 to 2007, he was Academic Deputy Director of the whole Cinvestav system. that time he played an integral part in establishing Cinvestav campuses at Monterrey, Tamaulipas and the National Laboratory of Genomics for Diversity in Guanajuato. From 2014 until December 2022 he served as General Director of Cinvestav. During this time, 2 new campuses were inaugurated,  in: State of Mexico  (2018), and the Center for Research in Aging in Mexico City (2022). During his tenure Cinvestav was placed as the leading research institute in Mexico and 109/8000 worldwide by the ranking of research centers of CSIC, Spain.

His current field of research is high temperature superconductivity and local atomic structure of systems of environmental relevance. 

He has published over a 100 research articles  and his work has been cited on more than 4500 occasions. 

He has also edited 3 books in the areas of x-ray absorption, superconductivity and education. He has been visiting professor at the Hebrew University, Jerusalem, Israel (1987), Los Alamos National Laboratory, New Mexico, USA (1996, 2000-2001), Argonne National Laboratory, Illinois, USA (1997), National Laboratory of Luz Sincrotrón, Campinas, Brazil (2003). University of Nice, France (2012) and Affiliate at the Adavanced Light Source of Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, USA (2024).
