After graduating with a BSc degree in Meteorology at the University of Pretoria (UP in South Africa) in 1987, Prof. Hannes Rautenbach joined the South African Weather Bureau in 1988 as a Meteorologist and later as Senior Meteorologist. In 1991, he joined UP as Research Assistant in the Department of Civil Engineering. In 1995 he was appointed as Lecturer, as Senior Lecturer in 2000, and as Associate Professor in 2006. He also served as coordinator of the Meteorology Unit at UP, which is the only Unit of its kind in southern Africa to offer undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Meteorology. In 1999 he received a Doctoral degree in Meteorology from UP. In 2006, he became Head of the Department of Geography, Geoinformatics and Meteorology at UP, a position that he held for eight years until 2014. Between 2010 and 2014 he also served as Director of the UP Water Institute. Between 2005 and 2010 he was President of the South African Society for Atmospheric Sciences and served as Board Member of the National Association of Clean Air. He served on various bodies that evaluate research and was leader of various research projects. He has currently published more than 50 scientific papers in accredited science journals, and presented more than 100 talks at national and international conferences. Between 2016 and 2018 he was appointed as Chief Scientist (Climate Change and Variability) at the South African Weather Service. In 2017 he was invited to serve as Extraordinary Professor in the School of Health Systems and Public Health at UP, and Professor Rautenbach currently hold the position of Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences at Akademia.
