Tom Sanya is an academic at University of Cape Town (UCT). He has a PhD in architecture from the Oslo School of Architecture (Norway), a Master’s of Infrastructure Planning from the University of Stuttgart (German) and Bachelor of Architecture from Makerere University (Uganda). His teaching and research activities are focused on climate smart design and water sensitive design. Tom uses analytical and evidence-based approaches to low energy and water sensitive design of buildings, including environmental simulation. He has developed and teaches a successful course in sustainable building design to over 70 students every year at the University of Cape Town. He has also developed an MPhil in Sustainable Building and City Design (SuBCiti) set to start in 2024. Tom is a qualified architect and accredited professional for green buildings and eco-districts. He undertakes interdisciplinary collaboration with academic and non-academic partners. He is a Steering Committee member of the Global Association for Buildings and Construction (GlobalABC) – an alliance that drives sustainable construction worldwide. He is also on the steering committee of the UCT Future Water Institute – one of the five strategic cross-faculty institutes at UCT. As Ambassador for the Swiss-based Solar Impulse Foundation, he promotes uptake of innovative solutions for sustainable development globally. Tom leads the Liveable Neighbourhood Research Project (exhibiting nature based solutions for informal settlement upgrading at Stand 501). See you there!
