Marcos Cortesão Barnsley Scheuenstuhl is an economist who graduated from the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) in 1988. He earned his Master’s degree from the same university and later went to the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) to develop a PhD. For many years, he worked at UERJ, focusing on Higher Education Policies and Funding of Higher Education in Latin America. He also worked at the Inter-Union Department for Socioeconomic Studies and Statistics (DIEESE), conducting research on Brazil's national financial system. Throughout his career, he has been dedicated to institutional capacity building and networking. In 2000, he joined the Office of International Affairs at the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC), where he initially oversaw relations with the Americas. He played an important role in helping establish the InterAmerican Network of Academies of Sciences (IANAS), serving as its Executive Director from its inception until 2010. He also served as Program Director of the Water Program of the InterAcademy Panel on International Issues (IAP), chaired by ABC from 2004 to 2011. He is responsible for coordinating ABC’s interactions with major international scientific organizations, such as IAP, the International Science Council, and the Science20 engagement group. In addition, he coordinates several national programs and initiatives, primarily in the fields of science policy, natural resources, health, science education, and environmental issues.
