Peer review is the backbone of research integrity, yet it remains undervalued in research assessment. Researchers are often expected to perform this critical work in their own time, motivated by their commitment to science rather than institutional support or recognition. This presentation will explore the current status of peer review within research evaluation, highlighting the systemic neglect of this invisible labor despite its central role in maintaining research quality. Drawing from draft recommendations developed within the CoARA Working Group on Recognising and Rewarding Peer Review, I will call upon research performing organisations and research funding organisations to perform pilots with our recommendations to ensure peer review receives the recognition it deserves in fostering an innovative and inclusive research culture.
